competitions and promoting video games. video games are okay then when it is used to sell the guns. the pages of junior shooters seeks to get children involved in the recreational use of fire arms once featured a 15-year-old girl holding the gun that was used in the shooting. who knows it said maybe you'll find a bush master under your christmas tree some frosty morning nonprofit groups

gun should be legal. several audience members shouted out, second amendment. he was unphased by the protesters. there are a lot of things that should be changed to prevent what happened, he said. that wasn't just a killing it was a massacre. he recalled dropping off his son that morning at sandy hook elementary. that is the problem with this gun debate. this is someone that just lost their six-year-old son and he is able to be reasonable and respectful. >> right. but not those other yahoos. >> stephanie: yes. they decided that might be nice -- >> it sure seems like the wrong people have all of the guns. >> stephanie: right. right. okay. so there's -- that story. so that happened. right. [ applause ] >> stephanie: we just talked about the reaction to this newtown parent. the headline is people didn't kill sarah palin's career guns did. they were remembering her reaction to tucson. the horrific mass shooting in tucson that claimed six lives palin was drown into the post-shooting conversation by giffords herself. sarah palin -- and they were comparing it to this tone-deaf response of the nra.

sarah palin waited four days then used the day of the tucson memorial to deliver one of the tone deaf self-serving responses to shooting ever. she remained about as popular with the people who already liked her, but then her unfavorable ratings shot up 50% and stayed there. >> so you were doing your sarah palin impression the other night. just spewing from both ends. over and over again. can boehner get this thing passed with democratic votes? it possibly could go through the house if they realize they have to do something this time. but i have to be shown that. >> stephanie: if he is worried the president is shoving them into the dust bin in history he has to realize it's demographics. >> i'm sure that wouldn't be the first time that john boehner % woke up in a dust bin. >> stephanie: here is chuck schumer. >> the first time ever there is more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it. >> stephanie: republicans don't do things because it's the right thing to do. it's because they have to. >> yeah, and again there is always a caveat.

there are a lot of republicans in the house who can oppose immigration reform and face no electoral consequence at all. >> yeah. >> and that is something that has got to be taken into account. it's possible that baner will be able to keep enough of the children in line that this thing gets passed but even if it sails through the senate which i don't think it will it will get bogged in the house. because there's too many people there with too much committed on the other side of the issue. i think there's a political imperative now that wasn't there a year ago. >> stephanie: every issue strikes me how out of step the house republicans are with the vast majority of americans. we were talking about the father of a newtown victim getting heckeled. just when you think is this

debate going to be different this time, you think i don't know. because the other side is the other side. >> yeah, i don't know why it takes people so long to understand how completely demented the conservative movement has made the republican party. and it has done through success. it hasn't done so through failure. there was a constituency for these positions, and they can't let go of it even to their own advantage. the clearest indication are the fact that the republicans really should be in charge of the senate right now, but they gave away four easy seats. >> stephanie: exactly. and as you and i got to see senator warren -- you are right the senate gives us hope. >> i think most important you have got progressive someone fors who have to be listened to. it's not like elizabeth warren got elected as this happy clappy

world. so far she is getting a lot of this one, are you running for president? >> i'm not thinking about anything like that right now. i am looking forward to finishing up my tenure as secretary of state and thin catching up on about 20 years of sleep deprivation. >> we here can relate to that one. the senate foreign relations committee has all but approved senator john kerry. this sets in motion a series of events to replace him, governor deval patrick will announce an interim runner tomorrow. one of the top contenders is rumors to be victory kennedy. barney frank said he wants the spot but even though governor patrick isn't saying yes or no publicly, he is not likely to get it.

but he has an interesting engagement on top. according to the new york daily news, he is getting ready to play a vocal conservative senator on stage in a new york production of toherello. his part has about eight lines and unfortunately no singing. we're back with more steph after the break. stay with us. honest. they know that i'm not bs'ing them with some hidden agenda, actually supporting one party or the other. when the democrats are wrong, they know that i'm going to be the first one to call them out. they can question whether i'm right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us.

right? >> that's right. as an eagle scout and somebody with openly gay parents i was not very pleased with the ban on gays. and so we have been working to lead the charge and we have a president called [ inaudible ] and it allows people all over the country to start petitions. and we used that to put pressure on the board members and to empower local councils and regional bodies of scout troops to make this happen. >> stephanie: this is pretty huge isn't it? >> it is. it was only seven months ago when they came down really hard and said we're not going to consider a change to the policy so we launched an effective

campaign that really highlights the damage this policy has. that being said stephanie, there is still a lot of work to do. >> stephanie: right. >> if you read closely what this says is while the bsa will have no position at the national level, it will not prevent local members from preventing gays from joining their units. so while we're moving in the right direction, we still have a long ways to go. >> stephanie: they obviously made news recently. they ousted a lesbian mom of her pack in ohio, right? >> yes and there was a lot of energy around that.

[ inaudible ] resort over the summer. and that's when it became clear to us that if we were willing to put the right amount of work into it, we would really be able to make this happen. >> stephanie: zach walls, as a former youtube sensation yourself, this is why, i think in some ways your testimony before the iowa state legislature caused such a sensation is because you put such a human face on it. you talk so lovingly about your two moms and how you are a normal family like everybody else -- >> i don't know if i would say we were normal. that might be stretching it a little bit. but we are absolutely a loving and committed family no doubt about it. >> stephanie: i think that's why we have made so many strides and i think that's why we're moving to quickly on these

subjects don't you? >> yes. >> stephanie: i think americans have a basic sense of fairness. >> absolutely. it's why we founded this country, no taxation without representation. it wasn't fair. so here we are today over 200 years later, continuing to perfect the union, and it doesn't just happen through changing public policy, part of it is by changing the kinds of groups that constitute the vast majority of activity in this country, and yesterday the boy scouts joining us continues to help perfect the union. >> stephanie: i remember your testimony so clearly, because you were so compelling. you are this gorgeous guy, and i think that's what resinates with people is you go these people are just like me, and you have moms that you love.

>> yeah, stephanie, you are absolutely right, but if it wasn't me, it would have been somebody else. the beautiful thing about standing on the right side of history is this kind of carries us all along, and it's an incredible thing, absolutely. >> stephanie: the other story was they refused to approve an eagle scout application for ryan anderson a california teen who came out as gay. >> that's right. >> stephanie: and again, i think when you -- again, american's basic sense of fairness and kids being excluded like that out just doesn't seem fair. is that not the base of it? >> yeah no doubt about it. we put his mom in touch with change.org. ryan is an incredible kid, and his parents too, karen and eric two incredible human beings.

they clearly, you know are there for their son and support him, and it's a beautiful thing to see you know. and so when i think about, you know, the basic sense of fairness, i absolutely think that part of it is having, you know, the understanding that, you know, a scout is a scout and you are what you are, and not -- that that will probably change by your sexual ore rentation or anything like that. >> stephanie: how do your moms feel about the supreme court? >> yeah, we're all holding our breath, no doubt about it. i filed an am cuss brief, friend of the court brief on that case -- on the doma case, and i believe they might use it for the prop 8 case as well. it's really exciting. it's a little crazy to have nine people hold that much power you know? >> stephanie: yeah.

so historically kind to the clintons. >> yeah. >> stephanie: miranda was at the hearing yesterday with the gun enthusist. hi, miranda. >> caller: hello. hi. i'm calling because i'm from sandy hook and i have really been working to help get safer gun laws. and i was not only in the march in washington on saturday, but yesterday in hartford for these hearings that we were having and there was a whole lot of people representing the other side, and they had a lot of arguments that really didn't make sense but i thought i might share with you. >> stephanie: we did the story about the father of a six year old that was heckeled by the gun-rights people. >> caller: i didn't actually see that.

but one of the things they were saying is that laws will only effect law-abiding citizens, which is pretty silly, because these laws would make it more difficult to purchase guns and especially these killing machines, but it didn't even make sense in terms of how laws work. >> stephanie: right. >> caller: another thing they were saying is people are asking why we need high-capacity weapons, but why do we need anything? we have the right to buy what we want? >> stephanie: yes, and those arguments just fall apart. you can't buy a -- >> a stinger missile -- >> a cannon. >> caller: right. you have to limit it. and they were saying that they needed -- a lot of them were saying -- as i was sitting with a whole bunch of people in an overflow room and they were saying they need their guns

that they need them for personal safety. statistically we know the opposite is true to protect their family. so we can't extend that to say we have to arm school teachers. >> they are talking about arming kids now. >> stephanie: yeah, exactly. and we were saying you can't get away from that statistic. you are 43 times more likely to kill a friend acquaintance, a loved one if you have a gun in the house. nicole seconds me this. a man was looking for his friends house, pulled into the wrong driveway and got shot in the face by the homeowner because he felt threatened. there are so many instances -- you can't tell me there wouldn't be a lot less tragedies. nineteen minutes after the hour.

>> and no exercise. >> stephanie: whoo! i'm fine now. nobody help me. 1-800-steph-1-2 the phone number toll free from anywhere. obviously everybody talking about immigration reform yesterday. september judy chu of the great state of california joining us. good morning, congress woman. >> good morning. >> stephanie: great to talk to you again. >> it's great to talk to you. >> stephanie: we always wonder is this time going to be different? and it seems like certainly the optics and politics of it have changed. what do you think? >> i think it is different. the senate bipartisan announcement made yesterday was very, very encouraging. in fact i think 2013 is the year we can have immigration reform because the american people support it democrats and the president want it, and republicans need it. >> stephanie: 51% of americans think illegal immigrants working should be able to stay and apply

for citizenship. and i think republicans are learning this demographically. john mccain basically came out and said that right? >> yes. >> stephanie: we're losing the hispanic vote. there's part of you thinks that's kind of cynical, but if that is what it takes to get something done, that's what it takes. >> it is practical politics. that overwhelming vote had to do with immigration reform. >> stephanie: yeah this is the thing i have never understood about this issue, representative, is last time -- we'll hear it again, house republicans are going to scream amnesty. didn't the last time we didn't get this done we just gave automatic amnesty to 11 million people. >> that is true. and i think we have a much better pathway here if we have a

dialogue on fair provisions. we can't have a bill that can be fair to americans and make sure that -- that every american is held to be equal and that they can have rights no matter what they look like or where they came from. >> stephanie: representative chu when you talk about is this going to be different -- i know a couple of my listeners have expressed concern that one of the things in the bill is when the border is secure -- but i mean, aren't the republicans going to basically say the border is never secure enough. >> i do have a concern about that. because we have spent more on border security than all other forms of security combined. we have spent enormous amounts on this issue, and in fact there are fewer people that have to be detained at this point because fewer are crossing over.

however, i do think that there is a legitimate issue with regard to at least knowing who is in our country with regard to those who have overstayed visas. i think there is some dialogue that can take place here. >> stephanie: lynn to john mccain yesterday. >> the republican party is losing the support of our hispanic citizens and we realize that there are many issues which we think we are in agreement with our hispanic citizens, but this is a preiment issue with those citizens. >> stephanie: does that actually help them or hurt them to say out loud we're losing the hispanic vote. >> at least he's being realistic. and also people would be more likely to believe that immigration can be done this year because he -- he said such a thing.

we do know that it is an incentive for republicans to come to the table on this issue, and then finally we can get something done that can ensure that people will be treated fairly and that families won't be split apart; that the young people and the scientists who are educated here will be able to stay and we won't lose them to other countries. >> stephanie: representative take us through legislatively what happens now. what happened yesterday was basically the senator putting forward a bipartisan proposal. now how do you see this playing snout >> the president will give his speech today. and that will be the starting bill. he will speak broodly about the changes we need to make. but then hearings will take place. i'm on the judiciary committee in which this debate will take place, and the hearings will start on tuesday in our

committee. i believe there will be bills that come out on both the senate and house side. and the bills will be passed in the spring and a conference committee will try to reconcile those two bills. >> stephanie: you look at john mccain and you think this is his third flip flop around this issue. first he did back it and then he backed totally off of it, now he's back on the side of comprehensive reform. do you think this will play out differently on the house side this time? >> the house side may attract more of the tea party crowd, but i believe this conference committee process that were put together the senate bill which i believe will be more reasonable, can have a fair bill in the end that can pass both houses. >> stephanie: and what -- you know, it's hard to say -- i mean on all of these issues -- i

mean, i look at -- we're also talking about the gun debate at the same time. and the president said if the american people want this, they can get it done. i don't want to give up hope yet that the politics are going to be the same every time. do you? >> i think that the american people are -- are speaking. i was so encouraged by the huge march in washington on gun violence prevention and i believe that there will be a strong voice a voice of unity by all of those who want immigration reform very soon. the american people want to make sure that this is a fair country, and that it's not about what you look like or where you were born that makes you american, it's how you live your

life and what you do that defines this country. >> stephanie: representative it really is trying to figure out how to overcome these house republicans who do not speak for the majority of americans. i'm looking at the superstorm sandy relief, and a whole bunch of republicans voted against it. >> i couldn't believe that myself. but i was encouraged by the fact that speaker boehner allowed for the bill to take place. it did pass with a majority of democrats. at least he allowed for it to pass even with a minority of republicans. >> stephanie: yeah. like you say at this point, any progress we can get with house republicans is some progress right? >> absolutely. >> stephanie: representative thanks as always. this is an important issue. we'll talk as this issue rolls along. >> thank you. >> stephanie: thank you.

lot of talk about the gun debate, right? >> stephanie: yes. >> caller: and we're still missing one big key factor here. it's not the guns that are really killing the people. it's the people with the guns. because they are making the ultimate decision to go out and use these guns. so i don't see why they want to stiffen the gun laws -- and i'm in california. california has the strictest gun laws -- >> stephanie: you don't think it is part of the problem, how many guns -- do you think there's a reason our gun violence is a bah zillion times worse than most countries? >> caller: yeah, but i also think when they took prayer out of schools -- >> stephanie: oh really! >> seriously.

[ wah wah ] . >> you think people are not praying when people are coming to kill them in their schools. >> stephanie: yeah. even the president is talking about gun control advocates have to listen more. everyone on every side of this except the gun nuts is willing to go let's look at this in a different way. president obama says gun-control owners should be better listeners overgun-control lives. >> yeah. >> stephanie: i tried to listen how many times have i heard guns don't kill people, people kill people. the president said he has profound respect for generations of hunting, part of being able to move forward is the understanding that the reality of guns in urban areas are very

different than the reality of guns in urban areas. and all of us back off our talking points. hands on it. the arguments often advanced by conservative lawmakers and the nra throw popular ideas into the debate.
